It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it." Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son. | | | Features: | |

Although difficult to read, you can not put it down. A must readMar 18, 2010 Many years ago I took this book on an extended weekend trip with my family. My husband fussed at me for not being able to put the book down. I finished the book in about a day and a half. Then he began to read it and couldn't put it down.
I do not find the facts embellished at all. As a reader most of the time you are able to tell when an author is being real or not and this story just seemed real.
After many years I wanted to look this book up to purchase for my now adult children. I know that their hearts will be broken for this child and it will leave a lasting impression on them also. "A Child Called It" was an eye opener for me.
"A Child Called It "Mar 17, 2010 "A Child Called It" is mostly about his mother abusing him. You should read about all of the horrorable things his mother does to him as he trys hard to survive his horrorfing life. If you like graphics books "A Child Called It" is the book for you . This book tells every little detail of how his mom beats and burns him. It feels like you are right there next to him feeling every single drop of pain he feels.
If his brother was not there he would have already been dead. His mother would have no reason to stop abusing him. His brother was the only thing keeping him alive.
"It" was just a player in his mom's game. He just has to follow her rules and play the game right.
And Dave Pelzer whole reason to write "A Child Called It" is to make a difference in child abuse. So help someone who is being abused becasue they just might be a "It".
rising above the circumstancesMar 08, 2010 This story hits the heart, but he is able to attain a balanced life after the hardship. It would have been hard to share this story, but it is so worthwhile for the reader. I have shared the book and have adopted a child from an abusive home. He too has developed a positive way of dealing with life in contrast to his early years. It was good to share Pelzer's story with my son. Thanks Dave. People need to know what some have been able to rise above - this is the Good News. Though difficult to watch, this could have been a movie. Coming directly from the author thru the book allowed me to take the walk with him!
the child called itMar 07, 2010 this book has a great description on the life of a child who is abused and is a great book to read if you want to know more about child abuse
